All afternoon Esme has been singing the songs she has begun to learn at school for her nativity play.
Those of you following LIFE AS IT IS, will remember that last year I had a teeny bit of Mary envy about this time.
On hearing the lyrics tell the story of a baby born in a manger, I asked Esme, "Oh, do you know who is Joseph and who is Mary?"
Yes, she said. Joseph is a boy and Mary is a girl.
That'll teach me.
Following this conversation, I questioned Esme further: "Do you think you would like to be Mary?"
"No" she said.
"Why's that?" I asked.
"Because I would like to be the donkey."
And I suppose that will teach me again.
Oh love her - how fabulous! xx
ReplyDeleteIt is rather isn't it?! I won't ever forget that one will I! xx
DeleteBless her! And why not? :) You may find though that Mary is a tiny part anyway! I've seen many more modern variations of the nativity over the years and often Mary is reduced to a tiny, walk-on part in the background.
ReplyDeleteToo true… whereas the donkey…???!!!! (All in jest).
DeleteWhy ever not, of course she would rather be the donkey! That is so very sweet.
ReplyDeleteI think so too! Thanks for commenting.
DeleteAw how sweet
ReplyDeleteThank you Alison
DeleteOh Bless - just remember the donkey is an integral character and your daughter, if clever, upstage all the other characters - loved reading this #pocolo
ReplyDeleteThanks! Integral indeed, not an ass at all!!
Deletehaha! :)
ReplyDeleteNot one to brag but I was a child of Bethlehem one year and promoted to Mary the next... Having said that when we did The Nutcracker the next year I was a snowflake, my acting career in tatters! ;)
LOL, I trust you got over it?!
DeleteAw bless her. One of my girls was the donkey last year :)

Thanks for the comment Karen. Thing is, knowing schools today, she could well find there isn't a donkey to play. Just as likely to be something completely whacky ;-(
DeleteLOL! At least she won't be disappointed! #PoCoLo
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping GG! Thanks for the comment.
DeleteBrilliant! I got Mary envy too but Grace just doesn't care! She is VERY proud to be a talking sheep this year and thinks the fact that she has made up her own joke with her lines - she is now saying Baaaaaby (in sheep speak!) - which she thinks is hilarious! Hope Esme gets her wish of the donkey. Thanks for linking to PoCoLo x
ReplyDeleteDear Vicky, thanks for this comment. And as always the PoCoLo link. I love the opportunity to have a good read of the other great posts x
