HALLOWEEN is coming, so let’s hope it’s a dry half term as there’s
nothing worse than soggy trick or treaters! Although we’ve plenty of ideas for
keeping the troops occupied indoors - here’s our top ten list of things to do
over the holiday week…
1) Carve and cook a
pumpkin
This bright orange squash is brilliantly versatile and great for
carving Halloween lanterns. Its sweet flesh makes it a treat to eat, too. The
smaller the pumpkin, the more flavoursome it will be. Try it in a curry,
risotto or sweet pie.
2) Make a Halloween wreath
Decorate your front door for Halloween with a wreath
to wreak havoc! Customise a basic vine wreath by attaching autumn leaves,
berries and apples evenly. Add pipe cleaner spiders, faux webbing, plastic frogs
and rubber mice etc. Write an ‘Enter if
you dare’ banner to hang over it!
3) Make toffee apples
YOU WILL NEED:
6 apples
300g demerara sugar
3 tbsp golden syrup
25g salted butter
1.5 tsp cider vinegar
and skewers or sticks
METHOD:
* Carefully dissolve the sugar, syrup, and butter in a saucepan with
75ml of water * Stir through the vinegar and bring to the boil until the liquid
turns to toffee * Skewer each apple and paint it in the toffee mixture * Leave to
set on parchment.
4) Visit Chessington World
of Adventures for Howloween
For the half term week through to Oct 31st, you and yours
can experience a fright night like no other. The Merlin theme park is up to wizardry indeed, excelling itself with scary
rides like The Vampire and Trick or Treat wood. Small kids will
love Room On The Broom spooky story time
and the new The Gruffalo Water Adventure.
Also new for 2017 is the Creepy Caves
Unearthed experience. To die for!
5) A woodland walk for arts & craft
fun
Take
full advantage of the season by foraging out in the woods for things that will
make beautiful home-made autumnal designs. Collect a variety of leaves, twigs, conkers,
acorns etc for rubbing, printing, and sticking.
6) Rainy day web solutions
Websites such as eparenting.co.uk will help you find
inspiring craft activities - from learning how to knit to offering free
printable colouring pictures, puzzles, and competitions. Meanwhile for fab
recipe ideas, visit bakingmad.com. Or spend a rainy afternoon making paper
airplanes, instructions from
7) Splash in the puddles
Forget staying dry, indulge your inner child and
let off some steam! Don a pair of wellington boots and whatever wet weather
gear you have and get outside and enjoy yourselves! Kids will love being given
the chance to splash about. You might want to take cover with one of the new
Autumn Fulton umbrella designs before coming indoors to get warm!
8)
Funkids FM live
Listen to the kids’ digital radio station ‘Fun
Kids’, broadcasting over the holidays. It’s full of stories, music and
competitions. Find it at www.funkidslive.com
9) That’s
debateable
Unchallenged children can often become
argumentative, so channel that with the interactive website funenglishgames.com,
where
kids can have fun learning how to debate.
