A probiotic suitable from birth? A review & in-house experiment (1)

After my Cows Milk Allergy Explained post, I've been sent details of a new product that hits the shelves from August, called Bio-Kult Infantis

I've found the information very interesting, and have given the product to a friend Andrea, for her three-month-old baby to try. Zak hasn't yet settled, and is very windy with potential allergy issues. It appears to have lots of good stuff in it for babies with problematic guts, which the press release blurb explains below.

For me, the following par has shed some light as to why Esme Grace (now my vivacious 5YO), had such an unsettled gut as a baby, and was in and out of hospital within her first year. (She was flushed with antibiotics in my womb during labour, and then given ten days of intravenous antibiotics immediately after birth for suspected meningitis).
'As 70% of the immune system is located in the gut a balanced gut flora from birth is essential to stimulate the development of the infant’s immature immune system. A balanced gut flora could help to avoid conditions such as colic, diarrhoea and allergies including eczema, hay fever and food intolerances.'

Anyway, I can't wait to see if it helps Zak and his mummy Andrea. I'll keep you posted of course, but in the meantime, if you have a baby with gut issues, this product may well be of interest to you too? Here's that blurb...

This summer a new product hits the shelves in Boots The Chemist, and is perhaps worth a try if you have a baby suffering with gut issues? Available from August, Bio-Kult Infantis, is a unique multi-strain probiotic formula, that has been designed specifically for infants, toddlers and young children.

Created by leading probiotic manufacturer Probiotics International Ltd, the latest addition to the Bio-Kult family combines seven strains of live probiotic bacteria, the prebiotic Preplex® (FOS & gum acacia) and is high in Omega 3. The formula also contains Vitamin D3, to contribute to the normal function of the immune system.

These ingredients form a unique and powerful combination to support your infant through the early stages from birth and beyond.

As 70% of the immune system is located in the gut a balanced gut flora from birth is essential to stimulate the development of the infant’s immature immune system. A balanced gut flora could help to avoid conditions such as colic, diarrhoea and allergies including eczema, hay fever and food intolerances.

Bio-Kult Infantis is available in easy to use 1g powdered sachets and contains essential ingredients for your baby’s growth including:
  1.  Strains of live probiotic bacteria including two of the most predominant species found in an infant’s gut. Research has already shown how these strains help to reduce diarrhoea in gastroenteritis, improve constipation and improve symptoms of eczema.
  2. High levels of Omega 3 believed to contribute to early brain development and cognitive function, along with immune support.
  3. Vitamin D3: ‘the sunshine vitamin’ that helps to contribute to the normal function of the immune system and is needed for the normal growth and development of bones in children.
  4. Preplex Prebiotic: A food source for beneficial bacteria, which is naturally present in breast milk.

Fab post Emma! Bio-Kult probiotics are a big part of my healing, alongside the GAPS diet. The more research I do the more it seems everyone could do with adding probiotics to their lives :-)

The GraceFaith girls have 'live' natural yoghurt everyday - plus the Udo's omega oil & with honey to sweeten it all. They are very well!
A far cry from the unsettled tum's they did have for such a long time!
We all need it - I agree. Thank you for your comment Mummy tries!

Hi Rayanne, remember it may not be the cure, but if it helps then that's wonderful. My two ended up with specialised prescription only formula and a host of other meds, but it is definitely worth trying. Good luck.
